Photographing The Perfect Shadow - Digital Photo Secrets

Photographing The Perfect Shadow - Digital Photo Secrets: "Photography is known as the art of capturing light. But did you know that the counterpart of light, the shadow, also plays an important role in the creation of an image? We all know what a shadow is, it’s that stalker that keeps following us on bright sunny days or well-lit places at night! Shadow is more than that though, it is also the darkest area of a scene as opposed to the highlights which illuminate the brightest. The challenge in shooting a scene that contains both highlights and shadows in it is to record the details without washing out the highlights or turning the shadows into unrecognizable black areas."

Getting Sharper Images - an Understanding of Focus Modes

Getting Sharper Images - an Understanding of Focus Modes: "The longer you shoot, the larger the repertoire of subjects and assignments you photograph becomes. You start off photographing flowers in the garden, your neighbour’s dog, your sister’s kids, your friend’s wedding and then before you know it you’re doing product shots for your friend’s new company. All this happens over time and there is one pretty fundamental skill that must remain paramount throughout out your process, properly focused images. Sure we’ve all been there, we’ve all taken that shot once in while which is slightly soft (a polite photographer’s term to describe out-of-focus images). But, it’s a great shot so we keep it anyway, even tho we would still have preferred it to be tack sharp."

Wedding Photography Tips and Techniques – PictureCorrect: "So – you love photography and have been asked by a friend to take pictures at their wedding. I’m a wedding photographer who realizes every professional started out by photographing a “first wedding” at some point. While I will still recommend you give the couple a monetary gift so they can hire a professional photographer, if you are going to go ahead and do the photography yourself, I want to help you do the best job possible!"

Depth of Field and F-stops – PictureCorrect

Depth of Field and F-stops – PictureCorrect: "Depth of field (DOF for short) is usually associated with the aperture, which is often used interchangeably with the word f-stop. The aperture controls the amount of light that passes through the lens and onto the film–or in the digital world, onto the sensor inside the camera. This amount of light is determined by the size of the lens opening (the aperture) inside the lens. On the older, traditional 35mm cameras, the settings on the outside of the lens that controlled this function were called f-stops. That’s why even though, technically, they are two different things, many writers use the words aperture and f-stop as if they were one and the same. It’s like calling the door knob a door. You do use one thing to affect the other, but they are NOT one and the same."

Long Exposure Photography and Some Tips

Long Exposure Photography and Some Tips: "I live in rural Alabama currently.  There isn’t that many great landscape opportunities to be had here.  When I come across one, I try to take full advantage of it. I learned about an actual waterfall near my house the other day.  Its about 15 feet high and crescent shaped as the land contours out of town.  The Alabama red clay has been eroded to the bedrock and the falls formed as the water cut through the soft clay. Its actually a pretty nice little fall, albeit seasonal and based on the rainfall. The water tumbles in a moderate flow over the bedrock into a small sandy pool before bubbling through some large pocked boulders on its continuing journey down the creek."

The Magic Light of the Golden Hour

The Magic Light of the Golden Hour: "My absolute favorite time to photograph anything is a time of day called the Golden Hour. The Golden Hour occurs during the time just before sunset, and just after sunrise. When the sun is lower in the sky, near the horizon, it must travel through more of the atmosphere, reducing the intensity of direct light and thus reducing the contrast in the scene. More blue light is scattered, so sunlight will appear reddish and shadows won’t be as deep as when the sun is higher in the sky. In addition, the lower angle of the sun creates longer shadows, which can add interest to images."
