Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 Review: Digital Photography Review: "Sony has a long history of making interesting cameras and has, in recent years, produced some of the most innovative products and technologies. Not all of these developments have caught on but we've admired its pioneering spirit, even when we haven't always loved the products.

The Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 combines aspects of two of the company's most imagination-catching cameras - the current RX100 II zoom compact and the near-legendary R1 from 2005. It revives the large-sensor, long-zoom concept of the R1, but utilizing the RX100 II's 1"-type BSI CMOS sensor, meaning it can offer a balance of high image quality and long zoom in a sensibly sized package. In this case it means the RX10 is able to offer a 24-200mm equivalent F2.8 lens."

Break the Focus Rule - Digital Photo Secrets

Break the Focus Rule - Digital Photo Secrets: "Ah, the focus rule. That’s the one that you learned first. You probably learned it the first time you picked up a camera, even if it was just a point and shoot that didn’t actually give you the ability to control the focus. You remember, your mom looked at your pictures and said, “Oh, that’s so cute, shame it isn’t in focus”."

They freeze time, a moment as it is, instead of the contrived editorial work of fashion shoots and perfume ads. These photos are so easy to connect with because they are honest portrayals of life."

The reason for the weird tint is caused by the naturally warm hue (color temperature) of the incandescent light bulbs which are common light sources in homes. Likewise, if you have ever taken a picture in a store or doctor’s office, your photograph probably had a blue tint to it; this is caused by the cool color temperature of a row of florescent lights. We don’t see the light’s color because our eyes have the ability to filter out the tint but our cameras aren’t as highly evolved as our eyes and often need our guidance to help create the proper white balance."

Faster, longer, better... - CNET Reviews: "There's a reason the lens which ships with many entry-level interchangeable-lens cameras -- usually an 18-55mm (APS-C) or 14-42mm (Micro Four Thirds) -- adds a mere $100 to the cost of the kit. It allows manufacturers to offer the most inexpensively priced option possible while still delivering a decent out-of-the-box, point-and-shoot-like experience. But while most kit lenses are decent, their narrow aperture ranges can be both creatively stifling and inflexible for shooting in low light, the latter environment where most inexpensive cameras need the most help. Still, there's something to be said for the convenience of a multipurpose zoom lens."
